Winfield Police Identify Body Found In City Lake Tuesday

An Atlanta man has been identified as the person recovered from Winfield City Lake Tuesday afternoon. 

75-year-old Jon “Mike” Michael Sanford was pulled from the lake around 4:45 p.m., according to Winfield Police. 

Around 12:15 p.m., members from the Winfield Police Department and the Winfield Fire/EMS Department were dispatched to the Winfield City Lake for a report of a boat in the water near the shoreline unoccupied on the north side of the lake. 

During the initial investigation it was believed that the boat was being operated prior to it becoming lodged on the bank of the lake. Based on this information initial search efforts were commenced both on land near the boat as well as in the water. 

Members of Winfield Fire/EMS and the Arkansas City Fire Department each initially deployed one boat to start search efforts in the water. Resources from outside agencies were also requested as part of the search effort, aircraft from the Kansas Highway Patrol was utilized as well as small drones from Cowley County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism.

During the search Sedgwick County Fire District’s dive team was requested to assist in search efforts. Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism and the Sedgwick County Fire District deployed boats equipped with Sonar technology into the water where the victim’s boat was last seen.

Just before 5, the victim was located underwater and deceased by divers from the Sedgwick County Fire District and the Arkansas City Fire Department.

As of this time no foul play is suspected. Members of the Winfield Police Department and Winfield Fire/EMS were assisted by the Arkansas City Fire Department, the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Sedgwick County Fire District, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks, and Tourism.
