Winfield Police: Drunk Driver On Stolen Fork Lift Damaged Cowley County Home

A 24-year-old rural Winfield man remains in the Cowley County Jail following an investigation into a possible drunk driver on a forklift, according to a media release.

John Carr was arrested Wednesday after Winfield Police determined he had burglarized Schmidt and Sons on West Ninth and taken the forklift without permission. He was booked on charges of DUI, burglary, felony theft and two counts of criminal damage to property.

Around 9 p.m., police were called to the area of Country Club Rd. and CS Smith Rd. for the drunk driving report.

While officers responded to this area, they received additional information that the person driving the forklift had gone to an address outside of the city limits into Cowley County and began to cause damage to a residence there. Cowley County deputies responded to the call, but because it was close to the city limits, asked Winfield officers to meet them at the property.

The forklift was located at 17987 65th Rd. and arriving officers found two men arguing in the front yard.

Upon observation several windows of the residence had been broken out and the suspect, Mr. Carr, had an injured and bleeding arm.

Winfield EMS was called to the area as a result of the injury. He was transported to the William Newton Hospital emergency room for medical treatment and later taken to jail.
