Stone Set To Retire As County Emergency Management Director After 20 Years

Cowley County Emergency Management director Brian Stone is planning to retire. He’s held the director position since 2002 and has been with the county in one capacity or another since 1988.

His official retirement date is set for Oct. 1. A search for Stone’s replacement is currently under way, county administrator Lucas Goff said this week.

“I’ve developed a lot of great working relationships with others in the field of Emergency Management with many becoming personal friends,” Stone said. “I will miss those interactions and opportunities to train along and work with those professionals. Cowley County has been a great place for me and I’ve enjoyed each and every opportunity that I’ve had.”

Stone, 53, said he has no immediate job plans.

He began work for the county part time in the summer of 1988 while a student at Southwestern College. Stone did an internship with Community Corrections his senior year of college and upon graduation, went to work for the Cowley County Jail.

He moved from there to a road patrol deputy, then back to Community Corrections. Stone began his career at Emergency Management in June 2002 as the Assistant Coordinator and was then appointed to the director’s position in Oct. of 2002.
