Preliminary hearing set for Udall man

A preliminary hearing has been set for June 8 for a Udall man charged with aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Richard Sears, 67, was back in District Court in Winfield Monday and will remain free on bond until his next court appearance.

Sears originally pled guilty but prosecutors later realized they gave Sears incorrect sentencing information. A change in the sentencing law demanded a longer sentence than prosecutors originally said.

The plea was set aside during Monday’s court hearing. Sears now faces the possibility of a life sentence without being eligible for parole for at least 25 years, according to Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith.
