Cowley County has plenty of old plates left

Cowley County Treasurer Kathy Foust has several thousand vehicle license plates to issue before she can begin handing out the new plates. Even then, not everybody will get one of the new blue ones.

“We’ll only give them out for new purchases or a lost tag,” Foust said. “It will make some people unhappy who want them right a way.”

Treasurer’s office employees expect to learn more about the new plates during a half-day training session in Wichita Thursday being conducted by the state motor vehicle department. The office will remain closed that day until 1 p.m. so the staff can participate in the training.

The plan to phase in the new “Ad Astra Per Aspera” plates over three years is expected to save the state money, according to Foust.

Kansas law requires a makeover for the basic license plate every five years. Foust said the state agency keeps track of the county’s inventory and will begin shipping the new plates when the inventory is reduced.

The current design has a likeness of the Statehouse with wheat and golden colors. The new design features the Great Seal of the State of Kansas and the letters and numbers are reversed, Foust said.
