County starts mailing first of advance ballots

The first of more than 1,000 advance ballots for the Nov. 4 presidential election were mailed today by County Clerk and Election Officer Karen Brooks.

The mailing includes ballots for the nursing homes.

You can request advance ballots now until Oct. 31 by calling Brooks’ office at 221-5400. They must be returned by the time polls close on election day.

Monday is the last day to register to vote. If you have moved or changed your name, you need to update your registration.

You can vote from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 25th during Arkalalah festivities at the Cowley County Attorney’s Office on Summit Street in Arkansas City, Brooks said.

You can vote in Brooks’ office on the first floor of the Cowley County Courthouse beginning Oct. 27.

Every member of the Kansas Legislature, the U.S. Congress, one of our two U.S. senators, members of the Kansas Board of Education, and two county commissioners will be elected this year. The county sheriff, register of deeds and county attorney are running unopposed.

Brooks is also trying to distribute as many maps of the precincts as possible before election day so voters know where to vote before election day. The number of voting places were reduced in recent years.
