Infant child recovering; placed in state custody

A Winfield infant injured at a local home Monday is leaving the hospital and entering protective custody, police officials said Thursday.

Emergency personnel arrived at a home in the 2800 block of E. 12th in response to a report of a child unconscious and not breathing. The infant boy was revived and taken to Wesley Medical Center.

Police Chief Danny Parker said the boy had recovered to the point that it would be released from the hospital. However, the child will not be returned to its parents for the time being, he said.

Instead, the infant is being placed in protective custody. Parker said the reason for that has to do with the condition of the home when emergency crews arrived.

The case is a child in need of care case and thus limited information is available, Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith said. He did confirm that the child and other children in the family have been removed from the home by the court but said it was unrelated to the injury sustained by the child.

Parents of the child have told police the infant was hurt by a fall from a bed and the cause of the injuries appears to be accidental.
