2nd Army serviceman killed has ties to Cowley

Army Spc. Daniel Cox ? who was born in Winfield and spent much of his childhood here ? died in action Saturday in Afghanistan. He was 23.

He and another former Cowley County resident, Tyler Juden, died in separate incidents on the same day. Cox’s patrol vehicle struck an improvised explosive device then was attacked by enemy force using small arms fire.

The incident occurred in Wardak Province, Afghanistan.

Cox’s grandmother, Loydene West of Winfield, said her grandson attended school in Winfield before moving to Parsons in the fifth grade. He had a girlfriend in New York and had planned to marry her next summer when he left the service.

West described Cox as a quiet kid who didn’t always do well in school but loved woodworking. He had once made his grandmother a coffee table.

He graduated from Parsons High School in 2005.
