Student charged with sex crimes, booze count

A local college student has been formally accused of sexually assaulting a teenage Winfield boy earlier this month. Andrew Sykes, 21, also has been charged in a second case involving another teen boy, prosecutors said.

Sykes faces a count of criminal sodomy, a felony, in regard to an incident involving a boy who was 14 at the time. He was arrested on Jan. 15 after the boy and his mother went to police.

Now prosecutors have added two additional misdemeanor counts to the charges against Sykes. He faces a charge of sexual battery in connection with a separate incident involving a boy that was at least 16 years of age.

Sykes is also charged with unlawfully hosting a drinking party for minors. Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith confirmed the charges had been formally filed but declined to provide details about the series of incidents involving Sykes that have been reported to police and prosecutors.

“I can tell you that since the original incident we’ve been contacted about other incidents involving the defendant,” Smith said. “And the additional charges were developed as a result of that information.”
