SC hosting School of Christian missions

For the second year in a row, Southwestern College is hosting nearly 300 people this weekend as the West Gulf Regional School of Christian Missions converges on Winfield.

The school represents 15 conferences of the United Methodist Church covering several states including Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

Sue Simmons, director of conferences and summer programs at Southwestern, says that college is happy to host the group again.

“Southwestern College hosted this event last summer and we are pleased and delighted to host this group again this summer,” says Simmons. “The campus comes alive when they are here. We have four resident halls, the dining hall, and classrooms filled during this event.”

Every year more than 20,000 people participate in the Schools of Christian Mission program at locations nationwide.

Regional schools and mission education events are an annual delegated leadership event sponsored by the women’s division of the Methodist church. Each school is planned primarily for the elected leaders of the specific jurisdiction and conference organizations of the United Methodist Women and for those with administrative and teaching responsibility in Conference Schools of Christian Mission.

The schools provide a primary setting for mission education, confrontation with current issues, spiritual growth, general leadership development, specific officer helps for members and elected leaders of the organization, to introduce current and new program emphases, and to build personal relationships among division members and staff and the elected leadership of the organization.

Southwestern College is a private institution granting undergraduate and graduate degrees and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
