Hutch man charged with running a scam

A Hutchinson man has been charged with felony theft for scamming an elderly Winfield woman in an insurance confidence game.

Winfield Police Chief Jerry DeVore said the investigation began after the daughter of the victim contacted authorities.A legitimate policy was sold to the victim, DeVore said, but a second, larger check independent of the sale was requested and received by the subject selling insurance.

DeVore said to use caution when dealing with anyone that shows up at your residence to sell anything without an appointment. The department also encourages anyone with elderly relatives living on their own to take time to review any insurance policies held by those family members, and then cross -check them with financial records to be sure the appropriate amounts were paid.

If you believe that you or a relative may have been the victim of something similar to this incident, contact Lt. Det. Frank Owens of WPD at 221-5555.

The Kansas State Insurance Commissioner’s Office assisted in the investigation.
