Read: Mom thought boys were sleeping

Two young boys found walking along a county road Wednesday morning by an off-duty Winfield police officer remained in protective custody Thursday.

A three-year-old boy was wearing only a diaper and a five -year-old a diaper and t-shirt, said Cowley County Undersheriff Don Read.

“The three-year-old said he was going to work and the five-year-old said he was going to make a hot dog,” he said.

Lt. Kurt Weber was on his way to appear in District Court when he saw the youngsters walking along Cowley 1, east of Winfield and north of U.S. 160. about 10:30 a.m., according to Read.

“They were talkative and able to respond to questions,” Read said. “They weren’t able to tell the officer where they lived.”

The children were taken to a juvenile holding facility and two officers began going door-to-door at 151st and 152nd roads knocking on doors.

The boy’s mother was located. She thought the boys were sleeping in a back room but they had snuck out a back window, Read said.

The parents were not arrested. However, the incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.
