Legal proceedings started in lost boys case

The Cowley County Attorney’s Office has initiated legal proceedings in a case involving two young boys who were found walking along a county road by an off-duty police officer June 27.

County Attorney Chris Smith said a child in need of?care case was filed in Cowley County District Court in Winfield for the three and the five-year-old brothers. Child in need of care files are not open to the public and the cases are investigated by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services and local law enforcement.

The cases can result in children being removed from the home.

Officers went door to door along County 1, east of Winfield, until they found the boy’s mother. She said she thought they were in a back room asleep.

Generally, a child in need of care case involves children who are less than 18 and who are thought to be without adequate parental care, or have been physically, mentally or sexually abused or neglected.
