Steven Shamburg dies from accident injuries

Steven Shamburg, a Winfield man who was critically injured in a car accident last month, has died, according to law enforcement officials. He was 45.

Shamburg was burned over a majority of his body during an accident on a curved section of N. College late on the evening of Aug. 27. He was pulled away from his burning vehicle by rescue personnel and taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Wichita.

Though he survived the accident, Shamburg had remained in critical condition in the burn unit at Via Christi-St. Francis hospital since the accident. The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office informed those involved in the case that Shamburg had died, according to Trooper Bob LeVelle of the Kansas Highway Patrol.

“According to information I received he went into surgery and did not make it out,” LeVelle said. “Now, where the sheriff’s department got that information, I don’t know. I will be looking into it some more tomorrow.”

LeVelle has previously said that high speed, and perhaps alcohol, played a factor in the accident. An investigation into the wreck has yet to conclude.

Gary Hardesty, a passenger in the 1993 Nissan car when it left the road, hit a tree and burst into flames, was not seriously injured.
