More than 2 dozen apply for corrections post

Twenty-eight applications have been received for the Cowley County Community Corrections Director position being vacated next Friday by Tex Gough.

County Administrator Leroy Alsup said no plans were in place for when the selection process will begin. It may be necessary to appoint an acting director while a new director is being hired, he said.

Gough has been with the department 14 years and has been director the last eight years.

He said he has observed the number of offenders growing as well as the severity of the crimes. Most crimes are drug and alcohol related, according to Gough.

There are currently 173 active clients in the local community corrections program. The new director will oversee a nearly $300,000 budget. He currently supervises three intensive care supervision officers, one substance abuse counselor and one administrative assistant. There are also two part time surveillance officers.

About half the applicants were submitted from people living in the county. County commissioners have indicated they want to interview candidates.

The salary ranges from $44,428 to $58,364 plus benefits, depending on experience and qualifications.

The deadline for applications has passed.
