Chief: Some at shooting had gang connection

At least some of the individuals involved in a downtown shootout Sunday morning were known to be gang members, Winfield Police Chief Jerry DeVore confirmed Tuesday. Police are meeting with prosecutors to decide who will be charged.

“We’ve got about a half dozen people connected to this,” he said. “The investigation is ongoing, we’re trying to get everything sorted out.”

A person of interest remains in custody in Sedgwick County but police are continuing to withhold the names of anyone connected with the incident until formal charges are filed. That could happen this week, DeVore said.

Investigators do know that the two parties involved ? some who arrived in a white Hummer H2 and others who were in a dark-colored Dodge Durango ? ended up at the Jump Start convenience store on Main by chance.

“They didn’t plan to meet up there,” DeVore said. “It just happened.”

Investigators are still trying to determine what role, if any, gang affiliations played in the incident.

Police believe two gunmen fired at least 20 shots during a gunfight that erupted following an argument between those involved. Aaron Brown, 26, Arkansas City, was shot in the arm and the buttocks but was treated and released from the hospital the same day.
