Affidavits being filed in Jump Start shootout

Cowley County prosecutors will file affidavits with the court for arrest warrants in an October shootout at the Jump Start convenience store on Main in Winfield, county attorney Chris Smith said Monday.

“We are in the process of getting the affidavits filed,” he said. “Once that happens we would expect warrants to be issued, but that it’s up to the judge.”

Smith would not say how many suspects might be arrested in the case. Investigators have previously said at least two men could be charged.

On a Sunday morning in late October 2007, gunmen exchanged nearly two dozen rounds following a verbal altercation at the Jump Start.

Aaron Brown, 26, was struck by one of the shots fired but was treated and released from the hospital shortly thereafter.

So far only one person connected with the incident, Robert L. White, 26, Wichita, is in custody. He was pulled over in Sedgwick County and remains in jail on charges unrelated to the Jump Start shooting.
