County is mailing out annual tax statements

The Cowley County Treasurer’s office is in the process of mailing the 2007 Cowley County tax statements. The clerks aren’t any happier to send them than taxpayers are to receive them.

“We have to pay it, too,” said deputy county treasurer Becky Fife. ‘I guess they think we work here and get a break.”

Both personal and real estate tax statements are going out. Personals include heavy trucks, trailers, non-highway vehicles and boats.

“We really have most of them out,” Fife said. “We might even be a little early. Usually, they aren’t out until around Thanksgiving.”

The first half of both tax statements are due Dec. 20. The second half is due May 10. If you miss the first half due date and let your taxes go delinquent, then you’ll have to pay the personals in full and a hefty penalty on the real estate.

“Anything but real estate becomes due in full if not paid by the 20th,” Fife said.

The clerks would be as happy as everyone else if the annual taxes were due any other time but during the holiday season. The average taxpayer gripes a bit when paying the bill.

“It kind of takes the holiday spirit out,” Fife said.

Vehicle tags for those with last name starting with T, V, or W are due this month. Keep in mind the courthouse and treasurer’s office will be closed Nov. 22 and 23 for Thanksgiving.
