Mother who left baby in car enters diversion

A Winfield woman who left her baby alone in a car in Dillon’s parking lot last August has been placed in a diversion program by the Cowley County Attorney’s office.

Sambria Shockley, 24, was charged with endangering a child -?a class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in the county jail and a $2,500 fine.

The diversion agreement filed last week in District Court in Winfield is for six months with basically the same conditions as other such agreements. She is not to violate any laws, attend school or work regularly, and must notify the county attorney’s office if her address changes. Shockley is also to report to the office monthly by mail.

Her baby was five-months-old when police rescued the child from the hot car. The baby was taken into protective custody. What has happened since then in court with the child is not a matter of public record.

The prosecutor could reactivate the case should Shockley violate the terms of the agreement.
