Local officials say dog rescue program works

Nearly 90 dogs and puppies have been transported out of Cowley County through a program designed to decrease the number animals euthanized locally.

The Rescue Waggin’ will make its fifth stop here this Tuesday to pick up more pets, according to officials with the Cowley County Humane Society. Through the program animals are relocated to areas of the country where demand for adoptable pets is higher.

Although the local Humane Society has already been participating in the Rescue Waggin program, the Humane Society has only recently received news of its official certification.

“This is a great opportunity for us,” Teresa Harden, director of the Humane Society’s animal shelter, said. “We have the chance to greatly reduce our euthanasia rates and take a huge step toward fulfilling our vision of finding homes for all of our adoptable dogs.”

Harden and two volunteers traveled to Colorado to attend training to learn more about Rescue Waggin’. Officials with the nationwide program say more than 14,000 animals across the country have been rescued so far.

The Humane Society and Rescue Waggin’ announced a partnership earlier this fall. Cowley County will be eligible for additional grant funds for working to control its rates of euthanasia.
