WCF, Humane society join dog rescue effort

Two local agencies are teaming to help find homes for animals ? through a program called Rescue Waggin ? while at the same time reducing Cowley County’s rate of animal euthanasia.

The Winfield Correctional Facility and the local Humane Society began the partnership in September to help address the high number of euthanized animals locally. Rescue Waggin is a national program designed to relocate animals from areas where a number of pets are available into places where there are fewer adoptable animals.

Each month, inmates will house and care for up to eight dogs from the Humane Society until the Rescue Waggin arrives to pick up the animals. The first group of dogs in the program at WCF are scheduled to be picked up for placement in Colorado around Oct. 8.

Local officials expect to save 200 to 300 dogs through the program.
