Bidding process expected for U.S. 160 fixes

Bids may be let later this week for the U.S. 160 and Cowley 3 intersection improvement project, Cowley County Engineer Dale Steward said last week.

Construction on the realignment project may not begin until this summer since the state highway department usually tries to avoid wheat harvest when involved in a major project, he said.

Construction will probably take 90 to 120 days and cost between $425,000 to $500,000, according to Steward.

The county commission recently approved a construction inspection services contract with Kirkham Michael & Associates Inc. for up to $87,947.78. The county will fund 10 percent of the inspection services and the state will pay the remaining 90 percent.

The company, based in Ellsworth, will inspect the work and material furnished but is not authorized to waive the provisions of the specifications or the construction contract proposal.
