May 8 is deadline for photo/essay contest

The second annual Cowley County Photo/Essay Contest will be held in conjunction with National Tourism Week May 10 to the 18th. The deadline for entry in the contest is May 8th, according to Connie Kimsey, director of the Arkansas City Convention and Tourism Bureau.

Photographs should be of a natural place in rural Cowley County or of an historical structure, such as a barn or bridge and should be of personal significance to the photographer.

A 300-word essay should be included explaining the personal meaning of the place in the photograph. Complete rules for the entry can be found at either the Chambers of Commerce in Arkansas City or Winfield or on www.arkcity.org or www.wowwinfield.org.

There are five categories: Elementary, Junior High, High School, Adult and Professional. Children younger than fourth grade may submit a drawing of their favorite place.

Entries should be submitted to either chamber. Judging will take place on Friday, May 9th. Photos and essays will be on display in area businesses during National Tourism Week. The winning photo and essay will be published in the 2009 Celebrate Cowley County Calendar.
