Rains likely to continue; river levels still low

Very heavy rains are likely in central, south central and southeast Kansas today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service office in Wichita. The storms may produce an inch of rain, penny sized hail and 40 to 50 mile an hour winds throughout the day.

There is a slight chance some storms may be severe.

A better chance for thunderstorms exists for Saturday and Saturday night and may linger over southeast Kansas on Sunday.

Rainfall to the north of Cowley County will affect local river stages. A flood watch has been issued for southeast Kansas and will be in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday.

The Walnut River in Arkansas City this morning was at 5.01 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. At Winfield, flood stage is 18 feet on the Walnut. The latest stage was 4.46 feet. Food stage on the Walnut in Augusta is 23 feet. The river stood at 9. 41 feet early today.

The Arkansas River in Arkansas City was at 11.07 feet. Flood stage in Ark City is 17 feet.
