Severe weather could affect holiday plans

Thunderstorms may create havoc with outdoor activities planned for the Memorial Day weekend. Meteorologists are concerned thunderstorms will develop along a dryline in western Kansas both Thursday and Friday afternoons moving east and affecting portions of central and south central Kansas.

The active weather may continue through the weekend and into the beginning of next week. Any storms that develop may become severe, according to the National Weather Service.

The severe weather outlook includes Butler, Sedgwick, Sumner, Cowley, Elk and Chautauqua counties.

There is a slight chance of severe storms late tonight but forecasters expect the storms to occur generally along and northeast of Salina to Cottonwood Falls to Iola.

The weather service is advising people check additional outlooks through the holiday weekend as meteorologists continue to refine the severe weather threat areas.

Skywarn spotter activation will likely be needed both Thursday and Friday evenings for locations west of I-35.April, May and June are considered “the tornado season” for south central Kansas although tornadoes may occur any time of the year. This year has been a particularly costly year in terms of damage and the death toll from tornadoes.
