Sedgwick lets Cowley burglary suspect go

A Haysville teen who ? is a suspect in the recent burglaries of three Arkansas City businesses ? has been released from the Sedgwick County jail despite a hold placed on him by Cowley County authorities.

Matthew Baty, 18, was originally arrested on charges issued in Sedgwick County but confessed last weekend to burglarizing Jim’s?Total Station,? Rakies service station and the Alumni Grill and Bar, according to local authorities.

Cowley County authorities placed the hold on Baty so he would not be released in before charges were filed against him in Cowley County District Court.

However, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office released Baty on the Sedgwick County charges and did not honor Cowley County’s request, according to Ark City Police Chief Sean Wallace.

"I am not happy.? We are calling (Cowley County Attorney) Chris Smith to expedite our warrant and then get him picked up again." Wallace said.

Since Baty confessed, a 15-year-old boy in Wichita has admitted he was also involved in the local burglaries. His name has not been released because of his age nor has he been taken in custody. Police reports will be sent to Smith with a request that a warrant be issued for the juvenile, Wallace said.
