Humane Society celebrates its fifth birthday

The Cowley County Humane Society celebrated its fifth birthday last Saturday with the usual balloons, tattoos and something a little different – some great adoption specials.

Homes were found for 24 animals during Saturday’s festivities. Several others were placed on hold to be adopted later this week.

Through Friday of this week, dog adoptions are only $35 and cat adoptions are just $25. All animals will be spayed or neutered and have all their necessary vaccinations.

"Last year, we had more than 50 adoptions during the week of the birthday," said CCHS Director Teresa Harden. "We could very well go over that this year and we’re really hopeful that it will happen."

Helen Thornton, one of the founding members of CCHS back in the 1980s, was unable to attend but sent some written remarks saying the initial motivation for organizing the society occurred in 1986 when a small Shih Tzu eventually named Miss Coo was adopted by Julia Caton Coe.

CCHS opened a shelter of its own in 2003 with help from Winfield and Arkansas City and special supporters.

"We keep moving forward," Harden said. "We’ve experienced setbacks like any organization but at the end of each day we know that we’re doing everything we can to find homes and provide care for the neglected, stray and abandoned animals of Cowley County."
