A camper at Walnut Park in Arkansas City discovered the body Sunday morning of an Arkansas City man who authorities believe hanged himself from a tree.
"At this point, it appears the man committed suicide," Ark City Police Chief Sean Wallace said.
Evidence indicated that Neil Retzer, 41, climbed the tree in a wooded area of the park. Trackers were called and verified only the victim’s shoe prints were near the tree, the body and the area where Retzer’s body was found.
"The camper did not get close to the body but saw it from 30-plus feet away," Wallace said. "There was no disturbance under the area where the victim was found, and evidence was present that he had climbed the tree."
Two campers and a fisherman in the park when police arrived were interviewed and released. The coroner has not released his report yet. He did not order an autopsy, Wallace said.
