Ex auto dealer gets federal prison sentence

A former Sumner County car dealer was given 21 months in federal prison for bank fraud, U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren announced Tuesday.

Marten Guthrie, 43, who now lives in Bel Aire, pleaded guilty in March to one count of bank fraud. When he made the plea, he admitted to fraudulently obtaining $385,425 in loans from Security State Bank in Wellington.

The illegal activity occurred over a period that started in Jan. 2005 and ended in April 2006. Guthrie borrowed the money for his business, Guthrie’s Wholesale Auto in Wellington, by submitting fabricated invoices to the bank, according to a written statement from Melgren.

The court ordered Guthrie to pay restitution equal to the amount of money he borrowed.

Melgren commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Assistant U.S.
Attorney Alan Metzger for their work on the case.
