Lake camping during festival brings in $13K

Displaced Walnut Valley Festival campers paid just over $13,000 in camping fees at the city lake during a period of the lake season that is usually fairly slow, city manager Warren Porter said.

Festival campers were forced to find other locations to set up when floodwaters inundated the Winfield Fairground less than a week before the festival began earlier this month.

Porter said it is unclear how much extra money the city will make once expenses are factored in.

At times, the city had as many as 12 police officers on staff at the lake. There are also a few other costs to factor, he said.

Porter admits the city was caught a bit off guard by the fairground evacuation and flooding. He called the crowds and overall situation at the lake "unmanageable" at times.

"Given the circumstances we did the best we could," he said. "But we were really in winter mode out there (at the lake) without our summer help. It was tough to manage."

The city will also gets a cut of any camping fees the festival collected before the floodwaters came. Porter said a big weekend at the lake usually brings in between $8,000 and $10,000.
