Canvassers will be ones to open provisionals

Cowley County election workers will probably spend the rest of this week checking the 400 provisional ballots from?Tuesday’s election, but they can only be opened and counted by the board of canvassers.

The three county commissioners also serve as the canvassers and will meet at 9 a.m. Monday.

Two of the three – Gary Wilson, D-Arkansas City,?ran for a second four-year term. Challenger Bob Voegele, R-Arkansas City, has only 20 votes less than Wilson of those counted in the commission district 2 race. Wilson has 1,864 votes; Voegele has 1,844.

Wilson is tentatively planning to have someone else sit in for him on the canvassing board since he is also a candidate, County Clerk and Election Officer Karen Brooks said.

Election workers are checking to make sure the voters were registered and registered correctly. If a person moves or changes their name, they are required to re-register. Many do not until it is too late in the election process.

Incumbent Carmelite Clarkson, D – Winfield, was defeated in her bid for a second four-year term by Alan Groom, R-Winfield. Dick Bonfy, the third commissioner, has two years left on his term.

The state deadline for getting final results into Topeka is 5 p.m. Wednesday. The courthouse is closed Tuesday for Veteran’s Day.
