Sheriff: Thurber used shoe to bust sprinkler

Justin Thurber has been back in Cowley County for less than week, but authorities Monday said he’s had time to cause commotion at the jail in Winfield.

The capital murder suspect ? who was in Larned for a mental evaluation until Thursday ? is said to have taken his shoe and struck a sprinkler head until it broke Saturday, dispersing water in the jail. Thurber’s cell and portions of a booking area had some minor flooding, according to Cowley County Sheriff Bob Odell.

Thurber was taken to another cell during clean up but was later returned to his regular cell.

It is possible that Thurber could face charges in connection with any damages done by the minor flooding, Odell said.

Thurber is accused of capital murder in the death of Cowley College student Jodi Sanderholm.
