Small fire torches attic of Winfield residence

No one was injured after a fire broke out in a third story bedroom of a house at 1120 E. Seventh St. about 4 p.m. Thursday.

Heavy smoke was pouring out of the third floor when the first firefighters arrived at the three-story wood frame home.

"After gaining access to the third floor, the fire was quickly knocked down," Winfield Fire Capt. Stuart Cassasboom said. "We had extensive overhaul to complete extinguishment."

Damage was limited to the third floor although there was minor smoke damage to the second and water damage to the second and third floors, he said.

Firefighters from Arkansas City, Atlanta, Burden and Udall assisted at the scene. Crews worked to salvage the furnishings and protect the property as best they can, Cassaboom said.

The residents were home when the fire was discovered. Their names were not available Friday morning from the fire department. The cause of the fire and the dollar amount of damage is still under investigation.
