40 have applied for Winfield police chief job

At least 40 people have applied for the position of Winfield police chief, city manager Warren Porter said Monday.

City officials expect to spend the next few weeks reviewing the list of applicants and narrowing it to a smaller group that will be interviewed. Interviews will be conducted during the first part of the new year and a new chief will probably take office by late February or March.

The position is open due to the impending retirement of Jerry DeVore who is expected to depart in January.

Of the applicants, six have been a chief or sheriff in another jurisdiction, Porter said. Four internal candidates have applied and at least eight applicants have some tie to Cowley County.

DeVore earns roughly $75,000 as chief and his replacement will earn between $60,000 and $75,000, Porter said.

DeVore ? who announced his retirement this summer ? began his career with the Winfield department in 1977 and has been chief since the spring of 2004.
