Authorities confirm fatality in Cowley wreck

A person has died of injuries resulting from an accident just south of the K-15, U.S. 77 junction east of Udall, according to officers at the scene.

A blue van caught fire and people were trapped inside for a time. Undersheriff Don Read confirmed to KSOK radio that one person had died.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating.

Freezing rain and lower temperatures are causing the formation of black ice patches on roads and highways Tuesday morning.

Local law enforcement officers are working at least three accidents in the county as a result of the slick conditions. Check with NewsCow for more on this developing story.

In addition to the fatality, morning accidents sent two people to Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita and three others to William Newton Hospital in Winfield. No names have been released.

The fatality occurred after the passenger van ran off U.S. 77 south of K-15 and crashed into a row of hedge trees. The van caught fire. The two victims taken to the Wichita hospital are believed to been involved in this accident.

A portion of U.S. 160 in the Wellington area was closed after a semi overturned and was leaking gas.

Black ice was being reported in some areas of the county about the same time as the accident reports.

Mutual aid between the various departments was necessary to handle the accidents.
