Stone is named interim Winfield chief of police

Brett Stone – who served as assistant chief under retired police chief Jerry DeVore – has been named acting chief until DeVore’s successor can be hired, city manager Warren Porter said Tuesday.

Stone assumed all duties of the police chief position effective last Friday. He will move up one step on the city’s pay scale until a permanent chief is named.

The pay increase is standard for all employees who take an interim position, Porter said.

There are internal candidates for the position of chief, Porter said, but he would not comment on whether Stone was one of those candidates. More than 50 people have applied for the chief position and the city is currently going through a questionnaire process that will lead to interviews.

Porter has previously said he would like to have a permanent chief hired by Spring.
