Latest blast of winter weather is approaching

A winter weather advisory for hazardous winter weather is in effect for south central Kansas from noon Monday until 6 p.m. Tuesday. The advisory includes Butler, Greenwood, Woodson, Sedgwick, Sumner and Cowley counties.

A winter storm warning includes Elk and Chautauqua counties. A light glaze of ice is possible and could cause highways and walks to become extremely slick and hazardous today and Tuesday. Hazardous driving conditions are also predicted for the Topeka area.

A winter storm system is approaching from the west. Patchy freezing drizzle and light snow is expected to develop across this area by midday – possibly mixed with sleet south of Wichita. A light glaze of ice is possible from any freezing drizzle today, the National Weather Service Office in Wichita has cautioned.

Slick travel conditions are possible later today and into early Tuesday. Two to three inches of snow is possible by the time the snow ends Tuesday afternoon.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of winter weather will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility. Black ice, in particular, is dangerous because it is invisible. It is regular ice that forms on surfaces because of a light freezing rain or because of melting and re-freezing of snow., water or ice on surfaces.
