Wellington woman killed in wreck near Ponca

A Wellington woman was killed and a passenger in her vehicle critically injured when their vehicle hit a patch of ice and overturned several times northeast of Ponca City Wednesday afternoon, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Rosemary Rice, 63, sustained massive injuries when she was thrown from the 2005 Toyota. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Krystle Scobee, 21, also of Wellington, was flown by Tulsa LifeFlight to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with head and arm injuries. She remained in critical condition Thursday morning.

The accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. on Hubbard Road, east of Waverly in Kay County. Rice was driving east when she hit the patch of ice. The vehicle left the road to the left. Rice overcorrected and the vehicle rolled two and one-half times, ejecting Rice. The Toyota came to rest in the middle of the road on its top, the Patrol reported.

Rice was not wearing a seatbelt. Scobee was wearing a belt. The vehicle was equipped with airbags but they did not deploy. Scobee was pinned in the vehicle for 40 minutes.

The accident was blamed on unsafe speed for conditions on the two -lane asphalt road.
