UPDATE: Ark City man killed in Okla. crash

An Arkansas City man was killed Friday morning when he crossed the center line on U.S. 77 north of Newkirk. struck another vehicle and partially overturned.

Francis W. Brown, 58, was partially ejected though the passenger side window and pinned under the 2000 Dodge Dakota he was driving.

Brown suffered a head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone in the vehicle, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at 6:35 a.m. 1.7 miles north of Newkirk in Kay County, near the first Casino.

Brown was northbound. The second vehicle was headed south and being driven by Billy O. Shephard, 74, Ponca City. Shephard was not injured.

Brown’s Dodge struck the 1998 Chevrolet Shephard was driving on the left corner. Brown’s vehicle left the road to the left and overturned one-fourth time.

The airbag deployed on Shephard’s vehicle but not on Browns’. Shephard was using his seatbelt.

Brown was not.
