Derby quilter to unveil designs at Winfield show

Two new patterns ? designed by Derby quilt designer Debbie Wiesner specifically for the Walnut Valley Quilt Guild Show in Winfield ? will be featured in a pair of classes open to the public.

The classes are scheduled for March 28 and 29 at Winfield Middle School and are part of the annual quilt show which this year is entitled Pieces of our Lives ? 30 years of WVGQ.

Wiesner creates primitive type designs for quilts, wearables and punchneedle through her label Out on a Limb. Her patterns include purses, table runners, aprons, decorated sweatshirts and denim shirts, wall hangings, and quilts.

She has had designs featured in the April 2007 McCall’s Quilting magazine and the May 2007 McCall’s Quick Quilts magazine.

Wiesner’s Saturday class at the show will run from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. The project will be Curve Appeal, a 70 inch by 70 inch quilt. The curved seams in this quilt are appliqu?d. An extra-large square-in-a-square block is the background for four easy appliqu? pieces which can be permanently stitched in place using a blanket stitch or straight stitch. The quilt comes to life after the sashing and corner stones are added, according to promotional materials.

Kits for this project are $53, while supplies last, and must be ordered by March 20.

Sunday’s class will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature the Bloomin’ Baskets design, a 54 inch by 54 inch table topper or wall hanging. Participants will learn how to use triangles on a roll to create perfect half-square triangles in no time at all.

After the scrappy triangles are created and added to the big, center, block, the appliqu? is added to bring the table topper to life. Kits for this project are available for $43, while supplies last, and must be ordered by March 20.

Each class will cost $25 in addition to the supplies. Participants in either of these classes will need to bring a sewing machine that is in good working condition and students should be familiar with the machine’s operation.

Supply lists are available. Students may provide their own fabric for the class or purchase a kit. Registration for these classes must be made by March 20. Those wanting more information or those interested in participating in one or both of these classes, may sign-up by contacting Carolyn Seeliger at 221-6544 or Penny Snyder at 221-0848.

The guild was chartered in 1979 and current members are from the Cowley County area. Denton Art Center in Arkansas City was the location for the first group of Cowley County quilters. The 2009 show has been dedicated to the charter members and a special area of the show will feature their quilts.
