50 workers needed for rebuilding playground

It turns out several dozen local laborers and skilled carpenters will be needed to help rebuild the Island Park Playground ? and this time around the jobs pay.

Lindsay Green ? branch manager for local staffing service, The Arnold Group ? says her company is looking for 20 skilled carpenters and 30 general laborers. Work on the playground is expected to last two weeks and start in late March or early April, which means The Arnold Group is working on a tight schedule.

Carpenters will make $12 an hour and laborers will make $8.

The playground burned to the ground last fall and the fire was quickly ruled an arson. Three people were arrested shortly after the incident.

Insurance proceeds are paying for a general contractor ? Wichita-based Don D. Rutherford and Sons Inc. ? to rebuild the playground. An all-volunteer labor force constructed the first playground in 2004.

Green says finding close to two dozen skilled carpenters will be a challenge but she certain it can be done. A few of the positions already have been filled.

"I think given the way the economy is now, with people laid off and not able to find work, we’re fortunate to be able to work with Don D. Rutherford on this project," Green says. "And we can put some people to work."

Those interested in a position should apply at the Arnold Group office, 1214 Main in Winfield. Applicants must have valid identification and be able to establish employment eligibility.
