Sheriff offering e-mail updates on offenders

Cowley County residents can now sign up for e-mail alerts that will let them know when certain criminal offenders have moved in nearby. Click here to register.

The program is expected to increase public safety and security and better protect children, according to Sgt. Christina Leffel, who is coordinating the new program for Sheriff Don Read.

OffenderWatch is free service that can be accessed on the Internet 24 hours a day. Anyone interested can register their address ? or any other address important to them ? receive the alerts.

An e-mail is sent anytime an offender moves with a two-mile radius of any address you list with OffenderWatch. Multiple addresses can be listed.

A short presentation and brief demonstration on how the system works is set for Wednesday evening at 7 Cowley County Courthouse. Anyone interested is invited to attend.

There are currently 64 registered offenders in Cowley County. Their crimes range from drug and sex offenses to crimes committed out of state.

OffenderWatch is updated throughout the day as offender information is updated at the sheriff’s office.

The program requires no public tax money to operate and is funded through dues offenders are required to pay, Leffel said.
