New local cell tower could lead to Iphone influx

Dreaming of an Apple Iphone? The wait could be over soon.

Winfield city commissioners Monday approved construction of a cell phone tower at 2201 Broadway, just east of Wal-Mart and Dillons. And the main provider using that tower is AT&T ? sole carrier of the Iphone.

The phones are usable in Winfield now and some people already have them. But, Winfield and Cowley County are not on AT&T’s 3G network ? which means surfing the net on the phone and downloading files can go slowly.

That’s kept some people from taking the Iphone plunge until all its best features become quicker and more convenient to use locally.

Patrick Steward, the city’s director of community development, said Monday that AT&T has indicated the new tower is part of the groundwork for an upgrade to 3G. But, he said, there has been no time line given for how long that might take.

The city will get $1,100 per month as a lease fee for having the cell tower on city property. The tower will be close to the city’s park shop.
