Read: Man’s head injuries not from car crash

Head injuries suffered by a Wichita man ? who was found in his vehicle near Cambridge Friday night ? do not appear to have been caused by a car accident as was first believed, Cowley County Sheriff Don Read said.

Matthew S. McIntosh, 30, was taken to a Wichita hospital by air ambulance after a tow truck driver found him in a car on U.S. 160 east of Cambridge just after 9 p.m. The man was upgraded to fair condition by Monday afternoon, according to a spokesperson with Wesley Medical Center.

Initially it was thought the man was injured in a motor vehicle accident but evidence at the scene does not support early reports regarding the incident.

"There’s a lot we won’t know until we’re able to talk to Mr. McIntosh," he said. "There are a lot of holes we can’t fill in."

McIntosh’s former wife told investigators that her ex-husband has family in Sedan and was going to visit them.

Read said the circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear and somewhat odd. Authorities want to know if McIntosh fell or was otherwise accidentally injured. It’s also possible he was a victim of aggravated battery, Read said.

It appears it was McIntosh who contacted the tow service, but he was unresponsive by the time emergency personnel arrived. The Kansas Highway Patrol has tested the man for the presence of drugs or alcohol.

Those results are pending.

The approximate location where McIntosh was found is mapped below.
