Chambers murder case on hold until June 8

Proceedings in the first degree murder case against David Webster have been delayed until next month, Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith said.

Webster was in court briefly Monday afternoon before attorneys for both sides agreed to delay the scheduling of a preliminary hearing until 2:45 p.m. June 8. Webster is accused of killing his girlfriend, Diane Chambers, of Winfield, and dumping her body in rural Cowley County.

The scheduling of the hearing has been postponed one time previously.

Smith said his office is waiting on a final autopsy report before scheduling a preliminary hearing, which gives a defendant a chance to hear some of the evidence against him outside the presence of a jury. A judge then rules as to whether that evidence is sufficient for the defendant to stand trial.

Webster has been in jail since he aided police in finding Chambers’s body on April 2. She was found near a bridge about 12 miles east of Winfield,on K-38 highway.
