Section of preserve to be renamed for Jodi S.

Family of Jodi Sanderholm have received permission from wildlife officials to rename a section of the Kaw Wildlife Area and erect a monument to Jodi there.

Sanderholm was abducted and murdered in Jan. 2007 and her body was recovered in the wildlife life area near Ark City. Her mother, Cindy Sanderholm, said that section of the preserve will become the Jodi Leann Sanderholm Wildlife Area.

Cindy said the idea was first suggested to her by then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius who was in Ark City at the time to sign Jodi’s Law ? an anti-stalking bill. The family waited until after the trial of Justin Thurber ? who convicted of capital murder in Jodi’s death ? had concluded before pursuing the idea.

The Sanderholms are working with Rob Caroll Sandblasting and Painting to design a limestone monument with Jodi’s birthdate and the day she was killed.

T-shirts and sweatshirts will be sold to help fund the project, Cindy said.

"It’s an honor," she said. "It’s a very beautiful area down there. It’s somewhere else to go to remember and talk to to Jodi again."
