Winfield authorities have begun investigating the death of a man whose body was found at the scene of a house fire early Sunday morning, Winfield Police Sgt. Chad Gordon said.

The county coroner has ordered an autopsy of the body found at a partially burned home at 1315 Ann. The man’s name has yet to be released.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene some time around 1 a.m after a friend of the family stopped by the home to check on the man. The friend found the victim and evidence of a fire that had already burned itself out, deputy chief and Winfield Fire Marshal Alan Stoll said.

Police believe the victim was the only person in the residence at the time of the fire, Gordon said.

The smell of smoke was still in the air around 3 a.m and some parts of the home visible from the street were blackened, presumably by the fire.

A large front window of the home appeared stained by the smoke and yellow police tape cordoned off much of the home’s yard.

Neither Stoll or Gordon would offer information as to how the fire may have started and both expected a thorough investigation to continue well into the day.

Gordon said it was too soon to offer any theories on exactly how the man died but said the incident was being treated as a fatality fire investigation.

A name stone bearing the name Greever, was visible in the front yard of the home.

The home is shown on a Google interactive map below:
