Smith: Webster jury selection moving ahead

Opening statements in the first-degree murder trial of David Webster could begin this afternoon, Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith said at the noon recess.

"I’m hoping we have a jury by 3 o’clock," he said. "If we do that, I hope to have five or six witnesses on by the end of the day."

Smith could not say how long opening statements in the Webster case might take but said jury selection, which began this morning at the courthouse in

Winfield, was moving along as scheduled.

A jury of 12 and alternates will hear evidence in the case. Webster is accused of killing Winfield’s Diane Chambers last year.

A pool of roughly 70 potential jurors was summoned for the case.
