Fairground grandstands getting a new ramp

The grandstands at the Winfield Fairgrounds will soon have a new wheelchair ramp, city officials said Friday. Work should begin in the next couple weeks.

The grandstand has had a ramp on the south end for several years but the structure was too steep to meet federal standards, city manager Warren Porter said. So the county’s fair board has offered up roughly $18,000 to purchase materials for a new ramp.

"We’ve have a ramp and that put us ahead of a lot of other places," Porter said. "Now we have a chance to bring it up to the proper standards, and we’re seizing that opportunity."

Porter said the city will provide the labor to do the work and also do some cement work needed for the project. The city has been working to improve accessibility for the disabled for the past few years.
