A man was pinned for more than an hour early Friday morning when the truck he was driving struck a telephone pole in rural Cowley County east of Winfield.

The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on 152nd Rd. just east of 131st Rd. An air ambulance touched down in a nearby field to transport the man to a Wichita hospital.

His name and condition were not immediately available, however Master Trooper Shae Wright, of the Kansas Highway Patrol, said the man was coherent and speaking with emergency personnel at the scene.

A number of emergency crews rushed to the scene in an attempt to help free the victim from the flatbed truck in which he was trapped.

The bed detached from the cab of the truck and landed several feet away. Force from the impact snapped the telephone pole and it wavered in the night breeze as personnel worked to free the victim.

The man was removed from the wreckage just before 2 a.m. – about an hour-and-a-half after the ordeal began.
